How to make the most of your Bus Tour
Our bus tour is the ideal vehicle for future residents who are curious about what senior living communities have to offer. You will be able to compare amenities, prices and services while gaining knowledge on the type of community that may be right for you.
Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your bus tour experience:
1. Review your estate planning documents.
Knowing what documents you or your loved one have in place, and when they were executed, is a great place to prepare for the tour. Lots of facilities like to see a Power of Attorney or Designation of Health Care Surrogate when a resident moves in. Attorney Jodi Murphy will discuss some key documents recommended for everyone, and strategies to maximize long-term care benefits as you ride to the next location. If you know where you stand, you will be able to identify where you need to go next.
2. Bring your appetite and comfy shoes.
Our tours include breakfast, lunch and light snacks at various locations. Dress casually and wear comfortable shoes, since you’ll be getting on and off the bus and walking around a bit.
3. Invite your partner in crime.
Well, no crimes should be committed today, but bringing a trusted friend or family member is always advised. A second set of ears and eyes on the tour will help you maximize your day. A second person may catch important information you missed and may raise additional questions based on your visits to the facility. As they say, two heads are better than one!
4. Prepare a Checklist.
Moving from home into assisted living, independent living or a skilled nursing facility is an adventure. Keep an eye out as you tour the facilities. Do the residents and staff seem happy? What interactions do you observe on your tour? Is there adequate staffing? Are the dining rooms, floors, rooms and walls clean and tidy?
5. Evaluate what is most important.
What is most important when choosing a facility? For some, it is location. For others, it is activities offered or ability to transition from independent living to assisted living/skilled nursing when the time comes. Regardless of your priority list, be sure to think about your priorities and add those to your checklist. Bring your phone to take notes and photos of the dining areas, grounds and rooms so that you can review them more thoroughly after you return home to determine if your checklist items are met.
6. Analyze your budget.
Some facilities we will tour accept Medicaid, while others are 100% private pay. Monthly prices will vary based on the type of facility and the resident’s medical needs. Knowing your budget beforehand will assist in the fact-finding process of which place may be best suited for your new adventure.
7. Write down questions in advance.
For example, if only you or your spouse needs help with daily living activities, can you both live in the same apartment? If you need assisted living later, is that available? What activities are available and how is transportation scheduled? What is the ratio of staff to residents?
